Greeting is an act of communication in which human beings intentionally make their presence known to each other, to show attention to, and to suggest a type of relationship (usually cordial) or social status (formal or informal) between individuals or groups of people coming in contact with each other. Greetings are sometimes used just prior to a conversation or to greet in passing, such as on a sidewalk or trail. While greeting customs are highly culture- and situation-specific and may change within a culture depending on social status and relationship, they exist in all known human cultures. Greetings can be expressed both audibly and physically, and often involve a combination of the two. This topic excludes military and ceremonial salutes but includes rituals other than gestures. A greeting, or salutation, can also be expressed in written communications, such as letters and emails. Some epochs and cultures have had very elaborate greeting rituals, e.g. greeting a sovereign. Conversely, secret societies have often furtive or arcane greeting gestures and rituals, such as a secret handshake, which allows members to recognize each other. In some languages and cultures, the same word or gesture is used as both greeting and farewell. Examples are "Good day" in English, "Sat Shri Akaal" in Punjabi, "As-Salamualaikum" in Arabic, "Aloha" in Hawaiian, "Shalom" in Hebrew, "Namaste" in Hindi and "Ciao" in Italian. The bow and handshake are also used for both greeting and leave-taking.

The first step in starting a conversation is your greeting. This is what you say at the very first moment that you see someone or speak on the telephone. And this is the first impression a new person will have about you when you speak. When greeting someone, it is important to use the appropriate level of formality for each situation. Are you comfortable using formal, professional, or casual greetings in English? Do you know when you use them? Or what about slang? This is exactly what this lesson will help you do so you can greet others in English with confidence in any situation. Email Greeting:

While sending your resume via email is quick, efficient and simple, you should use the same standards of etiquette that you would exercise if you sent a physical cover letter and resume. Potential employers will gauge your professionalism partly on the way that you address them and the formatting you use. Beginning your email with the proper type of greeting can be the foot in the door you need to obtain a promising new position. Find out the name of the person to whom you are sending your resume. If the job posting does not list the recipient's name, call the business directly and ask. Ensure that you have the correct spelling. A misspelled name can be disastrous in a cover letter because it says you haven't paid attention to detail.Address the person using the proper salutation and last name only. Use Ms. to address a woman and Mr. to address a man unless the recipient has another title such as Dr. If you are uncertain about the recipient's gender, contact the business and politely inquire. Begin the salutation with the word "dear," followed by the recipient's name. Follow this with a colon, which is the correct formatting for any type of business letter. For instance, if you are sending an email to Amanda Barrett, type "Dear Ms. Barrett:" as the salutation. Write a general but format salutation if you are unable to ascertain the name of the proper recipient, such as "Dear Human Resources Manager:" or "Dear Sir or Madam:".

Send out a cheerful, positive greeting, and most of the time you will get back a cheerful, positive greeting. It's also true that if you send out a negative greeting, you will, in most cases, get back a negative greeting.
